What are porcelain dental veneers?
Porcelain dental veneers are also called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates. These are custom-made shells of materials colored like the tooth and are designed to improve the teeth’s appearance. These can correct chipped, stained, or crooked teeth. Dentists are able to provide patients with bright, aligned, and natural looking smiles through placing a customized shell over the surface of the teeth.

What Are Veneers?

Dental flaws may cause embarrassment but these could be fixed with the wonders of cosmetic dentistry treatments. There are two types of materials which are used to make dental veneers. These are composite and dental porcelain. Composite veneers may be put directly or indirectly and then bonded to the tooth by using resin cement. Porcelain veneer, on the other hand, may only be fabricated indirectly. Veneers are very important for cosmetic dentistry. These can restore a single fractured tooth or give a total make over to all your teeth to achieve a perfect smile. Porcelain veneers can close the irregular spaces in between teeth which may be caused by mispositioned teeth that appear to be crooked.

How did porcelain veneers start?
Dental veneers were invented by Charles Pincus, a dentist in California. At the time, they fell off in a very short time as they were held on by denture adhesive. They were, however, used for temporarily changing the appearance of actors' teeth. In 1982, Simonsen and Calamia found out in their research that porcelain could be etched by hydrofluoric acid and that bond strength could be achieved between porcelain and composite resins that were predicted to hold porcelain veneers on to the surface of a tooth permanently. With today’s advancements in cements and bonding substances, dental veneers could last for 10 to 30 years.

What are the typical dental problems that dental veneers fix?
Dental porcelain veneers can fix problems such as:

Discolored teeth which may have been caused by stains from tetracycline or other drugs or excessive fluoride or other causes.
    Broken teeth
    Worn-down teeth
Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth which contain craters and bulges.
Teeth with spaces in between them.

What procedure should be followed in having porcelain veneers?

Usually, getting porcelain veneers implanted in your teeth will require you to visit the dentist at least three times. The first visit is for consultation and the second visit is for the application of the veneers. The first step to having porelain veneers is diagnosis and treatment planning. This involves careful planning between you and your dentist. You must agree on the result that you want to happen with your teeth. Thereon, your dentist will discuss the procedure involved to having dental veneers and may examine your teeth to determine the appropriate dental veneers for you. The second step involves preparing your tooth or teeth for a veneer. The dentist will remove about a half millimeter of enamel from the surface of your tooth, which is an amount nearly equal to the thickness of the veneer to be added to the tooth surface. Then, before the porcelain veneer is permanently cemented to your tooth, your dentist will place it on your tooth temporarily to check whether its color fits. Having dental veneers will provide a natural tooth appearance and could improve your self-confidence with your perfect smile.
